Our Future

Explore our long-term vision to lease, outfit, and launch an intimate black box performance venue through our Building Our Black Box Campaign.

Since our inception, Wisconsin Theater Arts has proudly delivered premium programming to families across our local community. However, because we rely on temporary spaces at local schools and churches, our venues can change frequently. Facility availability is highly unpredictable, and sometimes we’re still searching for a location just weeks before camps and classes begin, which means we often cannot finalize schedules more than a few months in advance.

To provide families with the stable, long-term predictability they deserve, we have officially launched our Building Our Black Box Campaign. Our immediate goal is to lease, design, and outfit a dedicated commercial flex or storefront space. Securing our own 24/7 calendar will allow us to expand our staff, run concurrent age-segmented classes, and establish a regular, year-round mainstage production season that our communities can rally around.

Our search for a permanent home is moving fast because the need is immediate—securing our own space ensures we never have to delay class announcements or scramble for seasonal venues again.

A black box theater is a highly flexible, intimate performance space characterized by its simple, unadorned design. Typically painted completely black to create a beautifully neutral environment, this style of venue completely removes the traditional “proscenium arch” stage barrier, bringing our audience right into the story.

This deliberate design choice unlocks incredible artistic and operational benefits:

  • Versatile Staging Arrangements: The seating and stage configurations can be completely rearranged for every single show, supporting diverse scenic design styles and historical periods.
  • Intimate Audience Interaction: Bypassing massive auditoriums fosters a profoundly closer connection, empathy, and artistic energy between our performers and viewers.
  • Hands-On Educational Classrooms: A permanent space gives our students an active, safe laboratory to learn every aspect of the craft—including acting, set construction, costuming, makeup, and advanced theatrical stage management.

Per our data-driven business plan, our strongest strategic path is to establish our facility within our historic community footprint—focusing our search along the high-priority regional corridor connecting Burlington, Waterford, and Mukwonago. Anchoring our permanent home along this active multi-county artery allows us to deepen our engagement with our core student base and families without competing directly with distant, urban providers.

To safely and respectfully accommodate all of our regional patrons, our future facility will feature single-level or highly moderate elevations, full ADA-compliant accessibility standards, and robust parking access matching standard municipality planning guidelines.

To sustainably meet the rising regional demand for premium arts education, Wisconsin Theater Arts has engineered a clear, data-driven three-year business plan. By unlocking a permanent leased performance home, we are positioned to scale our operations, broaden our community impact, and secure long-term financial stability.

Over the next three seasons, we aim to aggressively scale our annual educational offerings from 4–5 classes and camps to 14 fully realized seasonal tracks. By year three, we will launch a dedicated community theater branch presenting four complete mainstage productions annually.

Securing a permanent flex or storefront space is our primary operational focus. By actively pursuing a smart lease-and-retrofit model over our current timeline, we can equip, stage, and open an intimate black box theater environment for a lean capital footprint of $50,000 to $100,000.

To keep student tuition and ticket prices highly affordable for all area families, we are intensifying our development outreach. Our goal is to achieve total financial equilibrium by year three, sourcing over 30% of total revenue from community contributions, grants, and cultural aid.

Building a permanent performance space for our community requires solid financial backing. Your tax-deductible financial gifts directly fund our initial $50,000 to $100,000 phase-one target to outfit, stage, and light our upcoming leased flex or storefront theater home.

We are actively forming our specialized Building Acquisition Committee to spearhead the scouting, legal vetting, and structural layout planning of our new venue. This committee reports directly to our Board of Directors on an active 3-to-6-month timeline to evaluate commercial flex or storefront spaces, assess municipality zoning, and map out long-term facility planning.

We are seeking passionate community members, energetic volunteers, and local professionals to donate their time, organizational talents, or specialized expertise across the following areas:

  • Community Advocates (Anyone with a passion for outreach, organization, and helping us spread the word!)
  • Real Estate & Zoning Experts (Property selection & lease negotiations)
  • Architects & Construction Specialists (Renovation blueprints & cost estimates)
  • Legal & Financial Advisors (Contracts, permits, and budget projections)
  • Fundraising Specialists & liaisons (Grant writing & campaign management)

Wisconsin Theater Arts can provide meaningful opportunities for youth and families and contribute to a vibrant, connected downtown. Their presence would bring positive impacts, creativity, energy, and vitality to Mukwonago. Their classes and performances would strengthen our local arts culture, increase pedestrian activity, and complement the growing mix of downtown businesses. Their presence is a natural fit for our community and an important investment in Mukwonago’s future.

The Mukwonago Optimist Club is pleased to offer our enthusiastic endorsement of Wisconsin Theater Arts and Patti and Peter Punzi as they work toward establishing a permanent black-box theater in our community.

Our partnership with Wisconsin Theater Arts began following the COVID-19 pandemic, when the theater group we had previously worked with was no longer able to provide our annual youth drama camp. Patti and Peter stepped in, and what began as a new partnership has grown into something we greatly value. We are now preparing for our fifth annual Drama Camp together in June 2027.

Over the years, we have had the opportunity to see firsthand the impact Patti and Peter have on the children who participate. Patti has a remarkable ability to connect with each student and create an environment where children with different personalities, abilities, and levels of experience feel welcomed and encouraged. Throughout the course of just one week, we watch students become more comfortable expressing themselves, working together, taking creative risks, and building confidence.

The productions themselves are another part of what makes Wisconsin Theater Arts special. Patti creates original material for their productions, while Peter brings the musical side of each show to life. Together, they provide an experience that is creative, engaging, and uniquely their own.

For the Mukwonago Optimist Club, our Drama Camp has always been about more than putting on a play. It is an opportunity for local children to build friendships, develop confidence, learn teamwork, and discover abilities they may not have known they had. Patti and Peter understand that purpose and have been wonderful partners in helping us provide that experience year after year.

We believe a permanent home for Wisconsin Theater Arts would be a tremendous asset to our area. Having a dedicated space in Mukwonago would allow Patti and Peter to expand the work we have already seen benefit so many local children and families and provide our community with greater access to theater and arts education.

The Mukwonago Optimist Club is proud of our partnership with Wisconsin Theater Arts and wholeheartedly supports their efforts to establish a permanent black-box theater here in Mukwonago.
